30/Oct/2014 - Paxton has successful first year at Security Essen 2014

Brighton UK, 28 October 2014: Hundreds of international security professionals visited Paxton’s stand in its first year of exhibiting at Security Essen 2014 in Germany. Paxton, which provides electronic IP access control and door entry solutions, showcased its innovative and intelligent product range at the show, including its award-winning Net2 access control range.

As part of its commitment to engaging effectively with the international market place, Paxton decided to take its own stand at Security Essen for the first time, allowing existing and prospective delegates the opportunity to learn about its installer-focused product range, integration partners and discuss current trends in the security market place.

Adam Stroud, Chief Executive of the Paxton Group, said: “We were pleased that so many of the show’s visitors already knew Paxton. It shows that the word is out about who we are and the response to the product offerings was fantastic.

“Our stand was positioned alongside a number of the major global brands in the security industry which reinforced our position in the market.

“Visitors commented on the simplicity of the systems, the training and the support, which help to ensure that Paxton’s name is at the forefront of installer’s minds.”

Demonstrations and trials of Paxton’s product range were available, allowing visitors to gain insight into access control and the features Paxton offer, including high security, ease of management and building efficiency.

One of the key themes discussed at the international event was IP, and delegates were keen to discuss how Paxton has developed its products with this technology in mind.

Adam Stroud, said: “Paxton’s products have been IP based for the past 15 years, so we are experts in this field.

“The security industry is increasingly demanding more of this technology, as it is easy to use, provides a cost effective solution and can be managed from a central point rather than from multiple areas around the building.

“In Germany the leading technology for a security system is based upon the insurance requirements for a building. This means that intruder and fire tend to be key. However, as IP technology allows for such ease of integration, we see that access control and other aspects become intrinsic part of the system.

“Installers increasingly demand and expect more from manufacturers. They want to be able to offer their customers a simple solution that can operate all aspects of their security from one platform, we are able to provide the perfect solution for this with our Net2 range.

“At Paxton we listen to what our customers want - our installers help and influence how we develop our products, providing solutions that are flexible and are right for the market.”

In addition to these intuitive features, Net2 v5 software offers innovative triggers and actions options, improved door control and turnstile mode, a cost-effective feature with a single door controller operating a two way turnstile. As with all Net2 access control installations, upgrades to the software are free of charge with no additional licence fees for adding the system to multiple workstations.

Brighton UK, 12th April: Paxton’s market leading access control products have been used to create a convincing high security set in Trance, the new film from Oscar-winning director, Danny Boyle. Three Mills Studios is London’s largest film studios and was responsible for creating the Trance set. The brief from Danny was for a very clean, modern and clearly high tech piece of equipment, set in an old world/auction house setting.”

The Three Mill Studios team were really pleased with the overall effect of the CARDLOCK readers and with the support they received from Paxton.

Dominic says: “Paxton couldn't have done enough for us and were incredibly helpful, especially with their understanding of our very particular requirements the whole way through the process.”

It is not the first time that Paxton kit has been used in television and film. Paxton readers have previously featured in BAFTA-winning television series, Sherlock and ITV hospital drama, Monroe.

Paxton products are designed with aesthetics in mind and have always proven popular with customers. Paxton offer an attractive reader range suitable for a variety of site requirements. This makes them an ideal choice for use in television and film, as well as off set where Paxton’s access control is used to protect thousands of buildings.

21/Jun/2011 - Paxton’s Access Control Promotes Greener Business Practice at Canoe England

Brighton, UK, 21 June: With the UK facing one of the worst droughts in fifty years this month, the need to conserve water is more important than ever. Paxton’s market leading electronic access control system, Net2, has energy efficient features built in. This helps companies to save money on utility bills and promote a greener outlook.

Canoe England is a government run organisation that supports the development of canoeing in England. In 2010, with help from the Carbon Trust and the Environment Agency, Canoe England’s latest site, Manver’s Waterfront and Boat Club opened its doors to water sports enthusiasts in Yorkshire. The club uses the Net2 access control system from Paxton to control water usage, ensuring that its green credentials are sound.

During the planning stages of the boat club development, chairman, Chris Hawkesworth, was looking for an access system that could manage security but also control other facilities inside the clubhouse. As a government funded building, making sure the boat club runs as economically as possible is paramount. Hot water for the showers, basins, kitchen and heating system is generated by a heat pump from the lake itself. The need to promote energy efficiency, stick to budget and save on expenses like water usage all has to be taken into consideration. With its energy saving capabilities, Paxton’s Net2 access control system seemed like the perfect solution.

Chris says: “In the past we have often had problems keeping the water usage to a minimum as people would leave the showers on. We needed a green solution that was vandal proof as well.”

Chris called in Richard Muscroft, of Churchill Security, who specified Paxton’s networked Net2 access control system to manage the club’s requirements.

Richard says: “When Chris told me what shower system the club was using, I realised I could integrate with Net2 access control units to activate the showers. This meant that we could set a timer on the showers via the Net2 software, ensuring minimum water use and therefore the greenest possible solution. Of course, Net2 is also ideal for providing total security on the club’s doors.”

Chris says: “A club like this has to keep its costs down to keep going at all. Net2 is so easy to use. We’ve had no maintenance call outs and no emergencies. It has simply given us an economical, green security solution that’s ideal for this Canoe England site, or any sustainable building.”

10/Mar/2011 - Paxton’s brand new Net2 Caller ID reader lets you open a door from anywhere using your mobile phone as a key!

Brighton UK, 10th March: Paxton secure their place as market leaders in access control with the introduction of a fantastic new reader that communicates via a mobile phone network. The Net2 Caller ID reader accepts a call from a phone in the same way it would a token being presented, granting door access accordingly.

This means that customers can now open a door at even the most remote sites from any location, without actually having to be present to swipe a token. The Net2 Caller ID reader is an ideal product for securing access to sites that are hard to reach and will save customers considerable amounts of time and money on manned guarding and security call outs.

As the Net2 Caller ID reader uses the proven technology of Net2, Paxton’s leading networked access control system, customers can rest assured their site is totally secure.

It’s completely free to call the Net2 Caller ID reader, once a user’s mobile phone has been registered as a token; you can even register a landline number to call from if that’s easier. This removes the cost and inconvenience of distributing tokens to visitors and users that only need to access the site occasionally.

As with Paxton’s other Net2 products, the Net2 Caller ID reader is an incredibly flexible security solution. User access permissions can be updated in the Net2 software from a PC at the click of a button; deleting a user when access is no longer required ensures your site is constantly protected.

The Net2 Caller ID reader is a great product for sites that already use networked access control. Offer this product for extra convenience when securing remote or infrequently visited sites, gates and car park barriers or communal entrances. It can even be used to perform triggers and actions like switching power on to lighting, heating, water and air conditioning.

03/Mar/2011 - International Access Control Giants, Paxton, Swipe a Starring Role in the Next Hit ITV Medical Drama – Monroe

Brighton UK, 4th March: Mammoth Screen is an award-winning television production company that specialises in the creation of high quality drama for mainstream TV channels like ITV. They have now finished production on an exciting medical drama called Monroe, starring James Nesbitt as a neurosurgeon, working in a fictional hospital in Leeds called St Matthews. The show, tipped to be ITV’s leading TV drama series for 2011, hits our screens next week.

Market-leading access control manufacturers, Paxton, were delighted to provide the show with some access control swipe card readers to make the hospital set look really authentic.

Based in an empty Victorian building in the heart of Leeds, Mammoth Screen’s art department took 10 weeks to put together the Monroe set. As the budget was limited they had to enlist the help of UK businesses who supply all the usual equipment that help real hospitals function.

Tilly Scandrett, Assistant Art Director for Mammoth Screen says: “Our task was to design and create the interior of a hospital and we wanted it to look appropriately realistic. As electronic access control is a must in any modern hospital, we knew we had to include some smart readers on the doors.”

Once the design team spotted Paxton’s satin chrome CARDLOCK readers, Designer Anna Higginson asked them to get in touch with Paxton.

Knowing how important access control is in a medical environment, Paxton were happy to supply Mammoth Screen with the silver swipecard readers for the set. Paxton’s electronic access control systems are industry renowned for engineering innovation and appealing aesthetics. As Paxton products are so simple to fit, the readers were added to most of the doors on the hospital set.

Tilly says: “Aside from the aesthetics of the set, we also had to think about access control for managing the flow of characters around the hospital. Some would only have access to certain operating rooms or meeting rooms, and then there were the hospital wards and the ITU to think about. We wanted it to look as authentic as possible. The readers look really sophisticated and that’s why we knew they would be ideal for the Monroe set. On a design level they were far superior.”

The Mammoth Screen team were really pleased with the final effect created and now filming is complete, Monroe is set to hit our screens on the 10th of March. Tune in to ITV at 9pm to see the set in action.

Tilly confirms: “Paxton have been really cooperative – we’d definitely approach them again when working on other projects. Creating something as complex as a hospital set on a budget is not easy, so getting support from companies like Paxton is vital.”

11/Feb /2011 - Paxton Ready for New Internet Technology as the Pool of IP Addresses Runs Dry

Brighton UK, 11th February: As the world finally runs out of IP addresses, electronic security industry experts, Paxton, stay ahead of the game by investing in IPv6.

Market leaders in the design and manufacture of electronic security and building management products in the UK, Paxton are always at the cutting edge of IT innovations. They are now designing their award winning networked security solutions with a new version of the Internet Protocol, IPv6 in mind.

Currently, the depletion of the pool of available IPv4 addresses is a serious problem, causing a flurry of activity across the IT industry as a whole. The result of the IP drought will mean more expensive internet connections, particularly for business services. Organisations will be asked to hand back spare addresses or pay more for them. At a time when the number of devices connecting to the net is increasing rapidly, this problem has to be resolved.

Changing to IPv6 is a significant task, requiring new equipment and infrastructure. IT departments will have to acquire new skills and make changes to their networks and servers. However, Paxton have already made a real investment in research and training in this new network technology. They are now one of very few companies in the world with its own website and internal network already operating on IPv6.

The existing protocol, IPv4, has been around since the 1970s, when such dramatic growth of the internet was not even a consideration. Nobody thought of a world with over three billion connected devices on one network. However, the gradual realisation that IP addresses would one day run out completely has seen the creation of several new technologies, including Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) methods, network address translation (NAT) and the new version of the Internet Protocol, IPv6.

IPv6 is the most practical and readily available solution to the limit of IPv4. Where IP addresses are getting bigger, the new standard IPv6 address contains 128 bits compared with 32 bits for IPv4. This means that the number of connected devices could in theory be around 3 with 38 noughts after it, therefore solving the current problem.

Paxton’s significant investment in this new technology, once again single them out as a customer-focussed company committed to engineering excellence and IT expertise. Backed by a wealth of experience, Paxton are constantly driving forward to bring innovative security solutions to the market. Paxton provides their customers with a reliable product range that will stand the test of time.

14/Jan/2011 - Paxton’s stunning designer readers create style and authenticity at Peckforton Castle

Brighton UK, 14th January: Peckforton Castle is an enchanting hotel in the heart of Cheshire, described by English Heritage as ‘the only intact medieval style castle in the country’. Built in the middle of the 19th century, it is now one of the North West’s leading venues for leisure breaks, corporate events, conferences and weddings. The castle has been used as a film location for shows, including Robin Hood, Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes.

Since taking over the castle in 2006, Chris Naylor, Managing Director has set about enhancing the visual aspect of the Grade I listed building, yet still making sure it functions well as a hotel.

He said: “We successfully strike a fine balance between preserving the heritage of this magnificent venue and ensuring all modern facilities run smoothly.”

Improving secure access to the hotel’s stunning guest rooms is an important part of his development plan. In early 2010, he contacted Simon Farmer of ACC Security Solutions, to specify an electronic access control system for the newly restored wing of the castle.

Simon said: “After taking a look around the hotel we knew aesthetics would be very important, Paxton’s Architectural readers were perfect because they are so low profile, it meant we could offer discreet locking for the rooms.”

To enhance the look and style of the hotel, Chris chose to have Architectural readers with glass inserts branded with the Peckforton Castle logo. To match this, Simon used the free card designer feature in Net2 to create guest access cards in the same way, for a really professional finish.

ACC installed Paxton’s Net2 access control system on 22 doors, including the lift. Now, when guests arrive at Peckforton Castle they are given a professionally designed access card that works the lift and allows entry to their bedrooms. Once in the lift, they swipe their cards on the reader and the lift knows exactly which floor to take them to – it will not give the guests access to any other floor.

Chris is really pleased with how Net2 and the Architectural readers are working for Peckforton.

He said: “The Architectural readers fit in really well here. I chose them because while they look discreet, I know they are also a good bit of kit.”

27/Sep/2010 - Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital chooses Paxton Access Inc to protect their patients!

Brighton UK, 27th September: The not for profit hospital has been caring for the community in Glasgow, Montana since 1911. They recently selected Hi-Line Security to install an electronic security system from Paxton Access Inc.

Based in Orlando, FL, Paxton Access Inc is the US Sales and Marketing arm of Paxton Access Ltd, the internationally developing British manufacturer of access control systems.

Now, all employees at Frances Mahon Deaconess can access the hospital via Paxton’s Net2 access control system. The system maintains a history of usage and ensures employees can only access parts of the hospital where they are permitted at certain times.

One of the key requirements for the hospital is to keep hospital doors open during working hours for patients to enter. These doors then need to immediately lock to avoid any high risk action to patients’ or employees’ safety.

Hi-Line Security used the Triggers and Actions function in the Net2 software to allow one emergency panic button to cause a group of doors to lock down automatically. This feature allows staff to safely exit the area, but anyone without a valid access card cannot gain entrance as the doors are locked.

Mike Boyer of Hi-Line said: "The software was extremely easy to configure and handles all the tasks we need for the hospital. This is the most comprehensive software package, that is designed for an easy transition from installation to on-site management."

02/Aug/2010 - Paxton’s Vandal Resistant Metal Keypad Hangs Tough at The Gym!

Brighton UK, 2nd August: The Gym is a rapidly developing chain of venues that offers their customers flexible and accessible gym membership. With 11 sites in major cities across the UK, The Gym is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing a modern health club for people on the move.

All day, every day, gym members can access the premises using an eight digit PIN code they receive when they join The Gym online. This means that The Gym is constantly accessible, even after staff have gone home.

With up to 1,100 people accessing The Gym’s busiest sites every day, security and the safety of their staff and members is paramount to The Gym. CEO, John Treharne, said: “It is vital to ensure the environment is safe and our customers are protected.”

Vistec Systems, based in Crawley, specified the Net2 system from Paxton to secure all of The Gym’s UK sites. They recommended the heavy duty Vandal resistant metal keypad to match The Gym’s smart, modern appearance. Vistec said: “The reliability and the aesthetics of the Net2 system were key; the access control system had to be efficient whilst looking really sharp and clean.”

All of The Gym’s sites are now secured by Net2 plus, with Vandal resistant metal keypads on the main doors for secure access and egress to and from the building.

The Gym has plans for a quick expansion; by the end of 2013 they hope to have ‘at least 50 venues across the UK in total’. John said: “The Gym concept is totally unique in the UK. The process we have developed is being enhanced all the time and Paxton is a part of that process.”

22/Jul/2010 - Paxton and Pelco Enter Integration Partnership

Brighton UK, 14th January: Paxton’s Net2 market leading access control system now integrates with the innovative DS ConneX camera software from Pelco, as Paxton joins the Pelco Partner First Program. The latest version of the intelligent Net2 software allows the integration of the Pelco Digital Sentry video recorder (DVR) version 4.2 or higher. This brings a new, competitively priced access control/CCTV solution to the market.

The shrewd pairing of two leading systems now makes it possible to view stored DVR images from the associated Net2 events. Should an unauthorized event occur, end users can survey CCTV/video security footage of a door at the touch of a button. Net2 becomes the single user interface for viewing the footage associated with access events. Integrating the Pelco Digital Sentry recorders with Net2 means that end users only have to monitor one piece of software, instead of two. The combined expertise of Pelco and Paxton has created a more accessible system integration that meets the needs of clients seeking to secure sites of any size.

Adam Stroud, Director of Sales and Marketing at Paxton, says: “The integration of the Pelco Digital Sentry recorders and Net2 access control has produced a market leading solution. The ease of use and accessibility of information means that the Pelco and Paxton systems are an even more attractive proposition for a wide range of applications. Most importantly, the customer gets a combined solution that is much more useful than when systems are installed separately.”

Stéphane Lantoine, Pelco API Business Development Manager EMEA, says: “Pelco offers a wide range of Digital Sentry recorders, and connectivity to popular access control solutions such as Paxton’s Net2 allows our integrators the opportunity to increase their efficiency and to meet a wider range of customer requirements. This integration will provide system operators with the capability to easily determine the appropriate response to unusual events or security threats.”

19/Jan/2010 - Paxton’s Fantastic Energy Saving Reader Now Accepts Mifare Tokens!

Brighton UK, 5th February: Mifare is now the most widely used technology on contactless smartcards and proximity cards in the world. Paxton have developed their Energy saving reader to accept Mifare tokens. This makes the reader a really diverse, cost efficient product that is suitable for a wide range of environments.

All the great benefits of the original Paxton Energy saving reader can now be enjoyed at sites that use (or want to use) Mifare cards. The reader accepts an authenticated Mifare card to switch on power to utilities and electrical equipment. Once a card has been detected, the reader toggles a relay that switches on lights, heating and air-conditioning, amongst others. This straightforward energy saving concept works because a user has to remove their proximity card from the reader in order to move freely around a site. This is perfect for sites that want to save money on energy bills.

Controlling who can operate factory machinery is also easy with this intelligent reader. Equipment can only be used once the reader recognises the presence of an authorised card. This restricts the use of machinery to staff who are trained to do so, which is great for complying with health and safety regulations. The Energy saving reader is designed help you manage your premises more effectively.

The Energy saving Mifare reader is a simple, low cost addition to a Net2 system. Now customers already using Mifare cards with Net2 won’t have to change their access tokens to benefit from improved energy saving and health and safety. It is a really useful addition to any budget-conscious site that is already utilising Mifare.

As Mifare is the standard token format for large sites like schools, colleges and universities, installers can now offer something extra to the education sector.

Brighton UK, 23rd October: As one of the largest sport, leisure and entertainment companies in Europe, Sheffield International Venues (SIV) now operates 14 venues in Sheffield alone. This includes the English Institute of Sport, Ponds Forge International Sports Centre and Don Valley Stadium.

Having used Net2, an access control system from Paxton Access, in the past, Tony recommended that it should be installed on some of the venues as a trial prior to fitting it to all areas. Ponds Forge, which boasts an Olympic sized swimming pool, amongst the other great facilities, was the first venue to have Net2 installed.

The system has been gradually rolled out to Don Valley Stadium, Concord Sports Centre, iceSheffield and the English Institute of Sport. Sheffield City Hall is also on the Net2 system, as an SIV-managed facility.

Net2 now controls access on 82 doors for over 1000 users across SIV’s venues. The management of the system is carried out by the security team at Ponds Forge. The systems are all connected over the existing IT network. Martin Sims, SIV’s Fire Safety and Security Advisor comments: “It is so much simpler being able to manage each venue from one central location.”

Tony and Martin are very happy with the system. Tony says: “In my experience Net2 is definitely one of the best systems out there. Systems that are capable of controlling multi-venues at such an economical price are rare. I would have no hesitation in recommending Net2 to any business.”

15/Sep/2009 - Net2 Helps Provide the Best Environment for Students at Seashell Trust

Brighton UK, 15th September: The Royal Manchester School for the Deaf first opened its doors in 1825. Now known as The Seashell Trust, they work with students with an increasingly complex range of communication and physical difficulties.

Partly funded by the local education authority, the Seashell Trust is also a registered charity. The Trust operates a school at Cheadle Hulme in Cheshire, which caters for these students. Much of their valuable work could not be achieved without the active fundraising undertaken by the charity.

Mike Pearn, the Trust’s IT and Resources Manager, says: “I felt that access control would benefit both staff and students by creating a safer environment.”

Net2, from Paxton Access, now controls access on 31 doors around the site. Four hundred and fifty staff and some of the more able students have been issued with access tokens.

The external doors on the college and the school are all controlled using Paxton Access Long range readers which allow access tokens to be read from some distance away. Automatic door openers have been fitted. Wheelchair users and staff find this a great help when entering the building. They have the hands free fobs fixed to the wheelchairs and when they approach, the system reads the fob and unlocks the door.

Mike says: “Some of our students can be disturbed by unexpected noises, Net2 allows us to restrict access to the corridors leading to certain classrooms. This allows the teaching staff to work with students without distraction. The system helps us to give the best environment in the different classroom areas.”

Overall, the benefits to the Trust have been huge; the combination of an installation company who look after them well and a great system with superb support is a winning formula.

01/Jun/2009 - The Vandal Resistant Compact Metal Keypad

Brighton UK, 29th May: Paxton Access, the leading UK designer and manufacturer of access control systems introduce the Vandal resistant compact metal keypad.

The brand new Vandal resistant compact metal keypad has been developed in response to feedback from Paxton Access installers. A limit of 10 Net2 nano control units per Ethernet or USB bridge and a maximum of 200 Net2 nano control units per site is recommended.

Ever adept at creating smart solutions to make installation easy, Paxton Access has also designed the Net2Air site surveyor kit; the essential tool for faultless Net2 nano installation. The site surveyor checks signal strength between the Net2 nano and a Net2Air bridge prior to installation which means installers are guaranteed total accuracy when fitting a Net2 nano.

Adam Stroud, Sales and Marketing Director at Paxton Access, says: “Net2 nano can be used in conjunction with our Net2 plus and Net2 classic control units for access points that are tricky to cable to such as gates, barriers and remote buildings. Of course Net2 nano control units can be used exclusively on a site doing away with the need for any network cable at all. Because the wireless environment is different at every site, we strongly recommend installers use our Net2Air site surveyor tool before installing.”

14/Apr/2009 - Net2 Hands-free Increases Safety, Security and Aids Disabled Access at National Star College

Brighton UK, 18th March: National Star College is a national independent specialist college for young disabled students. The college helps students fulfil their potential through innovative programmes of education and independence training.

The improving facilities and considerable funds invested in accommodation allow students with more severe and complex conditions to attend from across the UK. A vibrant social community makes the college much more than a learning provider.

Gerald Noble, Projects Engineer and Lynette Barrett the Residential Services Manager, decided that improving security for the students should be part of the college development plan.

When Net2 from Paxton Access was recommended, the new hands-free capability was an added bonus as some of the students struggled to use conventional locks and keys.

Lynette said: “The Net2 system appeared to be very easy to manage, could expand with our needs and had the added advantage of offering contactless hands-free access.”

Many of the doors in the residencies are now hands-free enabled with automatic door openers, meaning that every individual benefits from the system.

Net2 hands-free is great for buildings that need to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act. Some of the students attach the tokens to their wheelchairs and the proximity readers pick up the signal and unlock the door as they approach.

Lynette said: “It’s a busy place and Net2 has helped to increase privacy and made students more independent - something they strive for and are proud of.”

Brighton UK, 13th March: Released to the market in April, these eagerly awaited additions to the Net2 range provide even more flexibility when specifying or installing an access control system.

Net2 plus and Net2 nano have been designed to extend the possibilities of Net2, Paxton Access’ best-selling networked access control system. Net2 plus is a new control unit for the Net2 access control system. 14/Apr/2009 - Paxton Access’ Best-selling Net2 Secures Conquest Hospital

Brighton UK, 17th February: Based on a gently sloping site, the 16-year-old Conquest Hospital is a modern District General Hospital in Hastings.

In 2002 Conquest merged with Eastbourne Hospital to form East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust. The busy Trust serves the population of East Sussex and employs over 5000 staff.

When the hospital’s access system failed in 2007 the cost of installing a new system by their current provider was too high. Security Manager, John Kirk investigated installing the Net2 access control system from Paxton Access.

John said: ‘Security is very important in this sort of environment. Hundreds of people come through this hospital every day. We were aware of Paxton Access as the market leaders and that their systems set the industry standard.’

Vistec Systems of Crawley installed Net2 across all of the Trust’s sites, including the main hospital in Hastings, Bexhill Hospital, the Irvine unit, St. Anne’s and the Woodlands unit. A total of 6500 user cards are now issued and 83 doors are controlled by a Net2 System.

John said: ‘The ability to control who has access to which site is essential and Net2 provides us with this.’

The new Net2 system now acts as a deterrent to opportunist theft, and gives the Trust ‘total confidence’ in the access control they have on their blood bank, baby unit and mental health wing.

Being able to prevent access to certain parts of the building with an emergency lock-down, in the event of chemical spill or the need to create a temporary mortuary is also very appealing.

The Trust is so impressed with Net2 that they plan to integrate it with their fire alarm and extend it across their remaining remote sites. ‘Compared to our earlier access control system it is far superior. This is the best period of security stability we have enjoyed in a long time.’

08/Jan/2009 - Easyprox compact keypad: Access Control in a Door Handle

Easyprox compact keypad: Access Control in a Door Handle

Brighton UK, 7th January: Paxton Access Ltd (www.paxton.co.uk) has recently launched the Easyprox compact keypad, a standalone system that offers the same installation convenience as its proximity counterpart.

This all-in-one, battery powered, keypad, lock and access control system is perfect for internal security. With its control electronics housed within the keypad, and the battery power source replacing mains wiring, it’s incredibly easy to install.

Easyprox compact keypad therefore provides an economical answer to doors once deemed ‘too insignificant or ‘too difficult’ to secure due to inaccessible power supplies. The system’s understated appearance of brushed steel and black plastic makes it suitable for a wide variety of applications.

“I think that Easyprox keypad is well suited to a number of different environments. For example in a retail outlet it’s a great way to prevent customers from entering ‘staff only’ areas and stockrooms. Additional applications could include classrooms, sports halls, cleaning cupboards and university halls of residence,” Adam Stroud, Sales and Marketing Director, Paxton Access.

Adam continues, “In theory it’s even better value than its proximity forerunner because users don’t require tokens. I can’t think of a more convenient way of implementing internal access control. The system can be installed, and in use in under two hours.”

13/Nov/2008 - Paxton Access’ Net2 number plate reader; a breakthrough in number plate recognition systems

Brighton UK, 13th November: This amazingly simple to use system allows you to control access to your premises at great value for money. In the past, number plate recognition systems have been expensive and tricky to administer making them unsuitable for many customers.

The Paxton Access Net2 number plate reader is the easiest to install number plate recognition system available. Controlled directly from Net2 software, no extra hardware or specialist knowledge is needed. This is an accessible solution for everyone.

The Net2 number plate reader is so easy to install; once the camera has been mounted to provide a clear view of the number plate, a data cable is wired from the camera to the reader port on the Net2 control unit.

The Net2 number plate reader is then configured in the Net2 system in the same way as any other Paxton Access reader. Add the number plate to a user’s record in the Net2 software in exactly the same way as you would a normal token.

The infrared camera is used to read a vehicle’s number plate; the camera passes on these details to the Paxton Access Net2 system. The vehicle is then granted or denied access as appropriate.

Adam Stroud, Sales and Marketing Director at Paxton Access comments, ‘When we realised how many of our installers were frustrated with the current choice of number plate recognition systems we started to develop the Net2 number plate reader. The result is an affordable, easy to install, solution that no-one else in the market has to offer.’

12/Nov/2008 - Vandal Resistant Metal Keypad: Heavyweight Keypad that Stands-up to Abuse

Brighton UK, 7th November: Paxton Access is a UK based manufacturer of access control systems renowned for bringing stylish, practical products to market. Their most recent contribution, the Vandal resistant metal keypad is designed specifically to stand up to abuse. The keypad, with its understated satin chrome finish, is compatible with both Switch2 and Net2 access control systems.

As with all equipment that’s designed for outside use, Paxton Access realise that keypad readers can be susceptible to vandalism. This has been addressed by constructing the reader out of cast metal. In addition, the keypad’s large back lit buttons with cut-out numbers, make it well suited to exterior entrances that are poorly lit. The keypad is also equipped with security screws, and a tool to prevent tampering.

Trish Bambury, Marketing Manager at Paxton Access, explains, ‘Unlike the innovative vandal proof reader, which is buried in a wall, the Vandal resistant metal keypad is mounted externally. Because users need to physically enter a code, the solution was to make a keypad with unrivalled strength - hence the cast metal construction.’

Trish continues, ‘We realised there was a gap in the market for a heavy duty keypad. The weight of it alone shows just how strong it is. It simply won’t need replacing every time it takes a knock. For this reason, it represents exceptional value!’

The keypad’s robustness also makes it ideally suited to a number of physical environments where accidental knocks and scrapes may arise, from warehouses and factories, to sports clubs and harbour environments.

28/Aug/2008 - Monitor Staff Movements and Human Resource Information conveniently from Net2 Timeline

Brighton UK, 28th August: The latest version of the Net2 software from Paxton Access includes Net2 Timeline, a graphical display that shows human resource and access event information in ‘real time.’ Net2 controls who has access to your building and at what time, whilst recording each access event in the Net2 event log.

The Timeline application takes data from the event log and Net2 Timesheet and converts it into a ‘digestible’ format that can be used to conveniently view access events, plan staff holidays and monitor absenteeism.

Staff activities ‘fall’ into a number of colour coded categories and provide managers and human resources (HR) personnel with a clear overview of events. Trends for individuals, departments and whole organisations can be seen at a glance.

Adam Stroud, Sales and Marketing Director for Paxton Access explains, “We wanted the application to be as simple as possible to use. Because all or a number of categories can be viewed at any one time an administrator can either focus on a particular criterion or get a general ‘overview’ of events. The ability to ‘drag’ the page left/right, up and down freely to view specific days is exceptionally efficient. Once found a day can be viewed in more detail by ‘zooming’ in on it using the scroll (mouse) wheel.”

This stretches it out and divides it firstly by hours and then into minutes to reveal detailed event information in ‘real time’. Adam continues, “Net2 Timeline crams pages and pages of data onto a clear accessible display providing administrators with convenient answers to access event and HR questions!”

29/Apr/2008 - IFSEC 2008 eagerly awaits the unveiling of Paxton Access’ Net2 plus and Net2 nano control units

Brighton UK, 29th April, 2008: Paxton Access Limited, the UK’s market leading manufacturer of access control systems will be unveiling two great additions to the Net2 control unit family at IFSEC 2008, NEC Birmingham - Net2 plus and Net2 nano. Net2 plus control units communicate with the Net2 server PC via an existing Ethernet network. This removes the need to run a dedicated data cable around a site and reduces installation times greatly. In addition Net2 plus can support a daisy chain of classic Net2 control units.

Net2 nano control units use secure wireless technology to communicate with the main server PC via a Net2Air USB or Ethernet Bridge. Because they don’t use a dedicated data cable either, installation times are again greatly reduced. The USB Bridge connects directly to the server PC and has a wireless range up to 30m (typically 10m), perfect for smaller access controlled sites. The Ethernet Bridge has the same wireless range but can extend the capability of Net2 nano via existing LAN/WAN Ethernet sockets.

The new additions mean that installation companies can now choose the most convenient method to connect doors to a Net2 system depending on site infrastructure.

The recently launched Easyprox compact, Long range reader and Energy saving reader will also be on display at IFSEC. Easyprox compact is an all-in-one battery powered lock and access control system that’s perfect for low security internal doors. The Long range reader, designed specifically for car park access, means that drivers with hands free tokens can open car park barriers without having to leave their cars. The Energy saving reader has been designed to minimise energy waste. Lights and air conditioning are switched on and off with the use of an authorised proximity card.

Paxton Access has a host of other products that are currently in development, be sure to visit stand 11072

18/Apr/2008 - An integrated security system with mass appeal

Brighton UK, 10th April, 2008: Paxton Access the UK’s leading manufacturer of access control has announced the integration of Net2, its networked access control system, with NetVu Connected Digital Video Recorders (DVR’s) from Dedicated Micros. With both companies designing intelligent reliable products with mass appeal, this integrated security platform should prove very popular with installation companies.

With the demand for integrated security becoming more apparent, the ability to locate a specific event, authorised or otherwise (alarm, door forced etc), and view ‘what happened’ from the same application is increasingly important.

While Net2 logs each access event, all associated CCTV images are saved to a NetVu Connected DVR. These images can then be viewed directly from the Net2 software simply by clicking on the camera icon next to a specific event. This seamless transition means that a customer benefits from access control and CCTV, but with only one piece of software to monitor.

Although integrated security systems are not a new phenomena, they have tended to be the privilege of the select few. Adam Stroud, Sales and Marketing Director for Paxton Access explains, “Our collaboration with Dedicated Micros has opened up the prospect of integrated security to a plethora of businesses; the potential is massive. This package is suitable for organisations of all sizes; say from your small medical practice, up to large factory units and office complexes!”

Adam continues, “I think the combination is so compelling that it will give installation companies a tangible advantage when submitting tenders. There’s also the potential to maximise each sales lead by installing the ‘complete’ package, and a genuine reason to visit existing customers with retrofit possibilities abound!”

28/Mar/2008 - Paxton Access Inc. Appoint Tim Rose as Account Manager for Florida State

Brighton UK, 28th March 2008: Paxton Access Inc., the American sales office for the UK’s leading manufacturer of access control - Paxton Access, has appointed Tim Rose as their account manager for Florida. Tim will be the point of contact for installation companies throughout the State, assisting them with installation, specification and training on Net2 networked access control.

With over 25 years in the security industry Tim’s knowledge of the American security market is impressive to say the least. Gained from various roles including project design, installation, application engineering and sales, Tim will prove invaluable as Paxton Access Inc. expand into America.

Tim began his access control life as an installation and servicing engineer. As the market grew in the 80’s Tim switched to application engineering and sales. Net2’s ability to integrate with intruder alarms and Milestone’s XProtect and Dedicated Micros’ video surveillance is one of the reasons that drew Tim to Paxton Access Inc.

12/Dec/2007 - Energy saving reader

Brighton UK 15th December 2007 Paxton Access, the UK’s leading manufacturer of access control systems, has launched an innovative proximity reader that will help facilities managers to reduce expenditure on energy. Appropriately named the ‘Energy saving reader’, it guarantees that lights, air conditioning and other electrical equipment switch off when a room is vacated.

The reader‘s cover is designed to retain a user’s proximity card. Unlike other readers the Energy saving reader continually checks for the presence of a valid card. When a card is placed in the reader, its presence toggles a relay that allows connected equipment to be switched on. When the card is removed, the relay toggles back and turns the equipment off.

“Increasing energy costs mean all businesses are looking for ways of reducing their bills. It’s easy to forget to turn lights and air-conditioning off in busy work environments. The Energy saving reader ensures that employees don’t leave equipment on” says Adam Stroud Sales and Marketing Director, Paxton Access. “Energy saving is guaranteed because personnel need their cards to unlock doors around an access controlled site. When they take their cards for this purpose, lights and air-conditioning shut down automatically.”

Companies that already have a Net2 access control systems in place, will benefit from introducing the reader to all office, meeting, function and conferencing facilities where lights and air conditioning contribute to expensive energy bills. Facilities Managers considering an access control system from Paxton Access will increase security, and have the added benefit of controlling energy use too.

The energy saving reader can also be used to help ensure strict health and safety standards. The reader can be fitted to hazardous machinery to ensure that only trained operatives with authorised proximity cards can use them

29/Nov/2007 - Net2 integrates with Horizon Time & Attendance

Brighton UK 30th November 2007 Paxton Access has announced the integration of Net2, its leading network access control solution, with Horizon, the Time and Attendance solution from Thinking Software. “The depth of integration we are achieving creates a whole new range of applications for Net2”, says Adam Stroud, Sales and Marketing Director for Paxton Access. “For instance, Net2 users will be able to ensure their employees comply with the Working Time Directive or use Net2 as the driver for their payroll applications.”

The seamless integration of Net2 with Horizon brings together an advanced time and attendance system with the UK’s market leading electronic access control solution.

“Net2 has always had a personnel or HR function,” explains Adam Stroud, “in the sense that you can use Net2 to check on staff attendance and punctuality. However, seamless integration with Horizon takes the application of access control in the personnel environment to a completely new level.

“For instance you will be able to ensure that people work the correct hours, if necessary barring them out of their working areas to enforce this. That might sound draconian yet in certain occupations – such as radiography – it is critical from a health and safety perspective to ensure that people work their hours correctly.”

The second core benefit of integration relates to payroll. Each time a user swipes a Net2 token, the real-time attendance data collected by Net2 will be fed into Horizon, which in turn is integrated with all the leading payroll software packages. As a result Net2 will become a key driver in the accurate calculation of payroll.

Steve Rothkopf, CEO of Thinking Software, believes the Net2/Horizon integration offers enormous potential:

“As well as aiding regulatory compliance and health and safety, the integration of Net2 with Horizon will reduce the cost of administering payroll significantly. With many more people working flexi-time or limited hours the time it takes to calculate hours and wages has inevitably increased. The availability of an automated payroll facility on the back of an existing access control investment should therefore prove very popular with firms of all sizes.

“We are delighted to be working with Paxton Access. Net2 is an extremely flexible access control system that offers easy integration with Horizon products, and Paxton Access have proved very helpful and supportive partners with which to work.”

With a degree in Industrial Design and over 6 years engineering and project management experience, Tom will support and manage large Net2 access control installations.

After leaving De Montfort University, Tom joined ‘Industrial Design’, a new department at engineering consultants ‘The Engineering Link.’ Responsible for rail layout changes and safety systems, he worked closely with clients throughout each project’s life cycle.

Tom moved to Frontier Pitts (FP), a manufacturer of sliding gates, hydraulic kerbs and other perimeter security equipment, to focus on project design and management. While collaborating on large scale security projects Tom became interested in, and learnt about access control systems through his contact with security installers. “I knew that Paxton Access was the industry leader. 30/Oct/2007 - Net2 pivotal in innovative scheme to support electric transport users

Brighton, UK: 1st November 2007 Electric transport is now a reality, but how do you re-charge your electric car batteries if away from home or have no access to a ground floor electricity supply?

Knightguard Security in Brighton, in partnership with Park and Power, has devised an innovative kerb-side re-charging unit featuring Paxton Access’ Net2 access control software.

The concept is simple. Users of any form of electric transport simply draw up alongside a re-charging unit; access the power supply by presenting a proximity token to the Paxton Access PROXIMITY reader on the unit, and plug-in. The system is very easy to use and completely safe. Customers obtain a proximity token by pre-paying for the service.

The software behind the scheme is a Paxton Access Net2 network access control system. The software maintains a database of users, giving access to anyone who has pre-paid for the service. A full audit trail is available recording the history of every user. The system is monitored and managed centrally over the Internet from Park and Power’s offices in Brighton.

The system first went live in September for the Lewisday courier company in London and several London borough councils are expected to place orders imminently.

“This is the first installation of its kind anywhere in the world”, believes its creator, Mark Knight of Park and Power. “It’s simple to install and operate and incredibly easy to use. In fact, it’s considerably easier and safer than re-fuelling on a petrol forecourt.”

Trish Bambury, Marketing Manager at Paxton Access, is delighted with this latest application of Net2 technology: “Access Control is no longer simply about controlling access to buildings or rooms but is rapidly expanding into the service sector.

13/Sep/2007 - Net2 Access Control at Dublin Airport

Brighton, UK 17th September 2007 Parking at Dublin Airport has just become easier for the estimated 320,000 customers who park their cars in the QuickPark car park at the airport each year. An innovative new online reservation system developed by ParkMagic, the Irish mobile payment and wireless technology company, integrated with the Net2 access control system from Paxton Access has transformed passengers’ parking experience.

www.quickpark.ie is a new online reservation system developed and powered by ParkMagic. Customers logging on to http://www.quickpark.ie can now reserve their car parking in advance, making airport parking a swifter and more enjoyable experience.

Passengers logging onto the website enter the date, time of arrival and duration of their stay and can then check the availability of car parking spaces. Customers making a pre-paid reservation receive a pin code that is entered into a Net2 keypad on arrival at QuickPark where a space will have been pre-allocated. The same pin code is used on exiting the car park. By using a pin code customers no longer need to have with them the payment card used in making the booking, nor obtain a ticket at the barrier, which can be so easily mislaid during a trip.

John O’Sullivan, Managing Director of QuickPark said, “You can book your seat on the airplane in advance, check-in in advance and even book your luggage in advance so why not your car parking space? ParkMagic worked closely with us to develop an easy to use, secure system which not only allows the car owner to quickly park their car on arrival at the airport but which also means no more queuing at the machines to pay for your parking when you return from your travels.”

Adam Stroud, Sales and Marketing Director of Paxton Access is delighted with this imaginative application of Net2:

“Net2 is ideally suited to this kind of imaginative Internet-based database application. Developed specifically for the network environment, Net2 can be integrated easily into any similar scenario for local or remote access.”

Net2 is a network based access control system that can simultaneously manage tens of thousands of users accessing several hundred barriers or doors. Multiple sites can be networked over TCP/IP making Net2 ideal for large organisations or third-party monitoring companies. Users’ access rights and system parameters may be administered centrally or locally as desired.

Net2 is installed at a variety of large locations throughout the UK including sports stadia, public sector buildings, such as hospitals and schools, and large commercial sites.

13/Sep/2007 - Paxton Access launches range of ‘designer’ access control readers

Brighton, UK, 12th September 2007 Paxton Access’, the UK market leader in the design and manufacture of electronic access control systems has announced the launch of a new and unique range of internal PROXIMITY Architectural readers. “Our unique range of new access control readers is in direct response to requests from architects and designers for manufacturers to be more imaginative in the design of access control systems”, says Adam Stroud, Paxton Access Sales and Marketing Director. “We are anticipating strong demand from corporate customers for whom design and style is an important aspect of their built environment.

A PROXIMITY access control reader is the wall-mounted unit to which the user presents their proximity token, for instance in order to unlock a door or raise a barrier. Depending on the technology in use, this may require the user to present a token to the reader or simply to have the token carried on their person.

Until now access control readers have been uniform in design, varying little in shape or size, and offering almost no opportunity for the customer to exercise choice.

“Our new range of Proximity readers provides architects, designers and their customers the opportunity to exercise both choice and control over how their readers look”, explains Adam Stroud.

Designed to fit discreetly and stylishly into installations where aesthetics are paramount, the PROXIMITY architectural reader is manufactured using high quality materials and incorporates three high intensity LEDs, which show green for access, red for access denied and white when in standby mode.

The reader consists of two main parts, the reader and the insert. The initial range comprises three different bezel finishes – brush chrome, matt black and satin chrome – available with a choice of three inserts - wood, stone or glass. Furthermore, a template is available for customers who wish to provide their own insert, for instance to match precisely an existing wall finish. This gives limitless possibilities and provides the possibility of a reader that is truly sympathetic with its environment.

The architectural reader is designed to be partially sunken into the wall and is fitted using a supplied, bespoke backbox. The reader is suitable for use with Paxton Access’ Switch2 and Net2 systems.

13/Sep/2007 - Net2 Marine sets sail at METS 2007

Brighton, UK 6th September 2007: Paxton Access, the UK market leader in the design and manufacture of electronic access control systems, has teamed up with Secure Yacht Ltd to promote Net2 Marine to the luxury yacht market. Combining Paxton Access’ leading network access control system, Net2, with its new Marine Reader, Net2 Marine is the world’s only dedicated marine access control system specifically geared for all marine access control applications. Paxton Access and Secure Yacht Ltd will officially present Net2 Marine for the first time at the prestigious Superyacht Pavillion at METS in Amsterdam in November 2007.

Adam Stroud, Sales and Marketing Director at Paxton Access says: “Our new custom designed Marine Readers are aimed at both the superyacht and high end cruise market, where quality and aesthetic requirements are paramount. We are delighted to have developed this solution in partnership with Secure Yacht whose expertise in this market is unrivalled.”

Secure Yacht Ltd is a leading security consultancy and installer to some of the world’s largest superyachts. The company researched the market requirement for a marine specific access control solution after the installation of over forty controlled doors on the Amels masterpiece ‘Lady Anne PB’, a 70m yacht in late 2006. Secure Yacht’s Dean La-Vey commented: “It was clear that land based commercial access control systems were inadequate for the marine environment. Paxton Access rose to the challenge and modified the Net2 system to produce brand new readers of a quality and unique design that simply did not exist before in the superyacht market.

In addition to the new internal and external readers, the Net2 Marine software allows logging on and off of crew, and easy temporary access for visitors, guests, and maintenance personnel. When combined with the ship’s CCTV system, Net2 Marine presents a formidable obstacle for potential intruders.

In addition to superyachts, Secure Yacht Ltd has high hopes for Net2 Marine in the cruise ship and ferry market.

Paxton Access Limited, a market-leading manufacturer of intelligent access control solutions, are delighted to have won the PSI Premier award for Access Control Product of the Year.

Adam Stroud, Paxton Access’ Sales & Marketing Director says, “To have won an award exclusively voted on by security installers means a lot to us. We are always striving to develop products that are innovative and fill a need in the marketplace. Our hands-free access control has been designed to be straightforward and economical to install. 23/Apr/2007 - Paxton Access unveils multiple new products at IFSEC 2007

Brighton, UK, 24th April 2007: At IFSEC 2007, Paxton Access Limited, the UK market leader in the design and manufacture of electronic access control systems, is unveiling a series of important new product lines including Net2 nano (a new wireless control unit for Net2), a new range of PROXIMITY Architectural readers, and Easyprox, an all-in-one battery powered lock and access control system with wireless connection to Net2 software.

Net2 nano is a new wireless control unit for Net2, Paxton Access'' leading network access control system. Net2 nano will reduce the cost of purchasing and installing Net2 as it is easy to install in environments where a wired solution is impractical or limits the number of doors on a system.

Customers want a choice of fixed wired and wireless control units”, continues Mark Thompson, Paxton Access'' Development Director. “Wired systems offer the ultimate in reliability and guaranteed response, whereas wireless control units are better suited to applications where users do not need a guarantee that the control units can report information to the Net2 server in ''real-time''”.

Paxton Access'' new and unique range of PROXIMITY Architectural readers will transform the appearance of access control readers in corporate organisations for whom design and style is an important aspect of their image. The range comprises three different bezel finishes - brush chrome, matt black and satin chrome – available with a choice of three inserts - wood, stone or glass. An insert template is also available for customers who wish to provide their own insert, for instance to match an existing wall finish.

With its all-in-one battery powered lock and access control system, Easyprox will broaden the appeal of wireless network access control. With wireless connection to Net2 software, Easyprox offers features usually associated with much more complex systems. Like Net2 nano, ease of installation will prove a decisive factor in its popularity.

Finally the Paxton Access stand (Hall 6, stand 11072) will also feature:

  • A new marine reader fabricated from marine grade stainless steel making it suitable for the harshest of outdoor environments. The reader features a blue backlight for optimum visibility with the light changing as the token is presented.
  • Paxton Access'' new Net2Air Site Surveyor kit that is used to assess the suitability of a site for Net2 nano.

18/Apr/2007 - Net2 from Paxton Access goes wireless with Net2 nano

Brighton, UK, 18th April 2007: At IFSEC 2007, Paxton Access Limited, the UK market leader in the design and manufacture of electronic access control systems, is launching Net2 nano, a new wireless control unit for Net2, Paxton Access' leading network access control system. “Net2 nano will reduce the cost of purchasing and installing Net2”, says Mark Thompson, Paxton Access' Technical Director. “Also, because Net2 nano is easy to install in environments where a wired solution is impractical or limits the number of doors on a system, Net2 nano will encourage the wider adoption of network access control.”

A Net2 access control system comprises one or more Net2 control units that are wired to the central Net2 server. Each control unit runs independently and reports centrally on user access and events. Net2 nano is a wireless control unit that connects to the central Net2 server, via a Net2 desktop reader, using Paxton Access' proprietary and secure Net2Air wireless technology.

“Customers want a choice of fixed wired and wireless control units”, continues Mark Thompson. “Wired systems offer the ultimate in reliability and guaranteed response, whereas wireless control units are better suited to applications where users do not need a guarantee that the control units can report information to the Net2 server in 'real-time'.

Our customers are constantly looking for ways to reduce installation costs and encourage the widespread adoption of access control. Net2 nano is undoubtedly quicker and therefore cheaper to install. This means that where doors were previously considered too difficult or costly to add (perhaps because of the low traffic they experience) Net2 nano can provide a very cost effective route to their inclusion within a Net2 system.”

Net2 nano control units can be mixed with Net2 control units and can be added to existing Net2 installations. Any changes made at the Net2 server are immediately communicated and stored at the Net2 nano control unit just as they would be with an ordinary Net2 control unit. The suitability of a site for Net2 nano can be assessed using Paxton Access' Net2Air Site Surveyor kit.

For more information, visit the Paxton Access at IFSEC, NEC Birmingham: 21-24 May 2007, stand 11072.

28/Jul/2006 - Net2AIR now available

Brighton, UK, 28th July 2006: Paxton Access Limited (http://www.paxton.co.uk)has announced that Net2AIR is now available from all leading UK distributors. Net2AIR is the new hands free capability for users of Net2, the leading network access control system.

Net2AIR offers significant advantages over conventional hands free access control systems:

  • Compared with typical competing hands free solutions, Net2AIR increases read ranges by up to 150%
  • Its long distance read range from small, inconspicuous readers offers user convenience without compromising building design or requiring fit of door or ground loops
  • Net2AIR is easy to retrofit to existing Net2 systems - this avoids hardware redundancy and provides easy path to future upgrades
  • Allows simultaneous use of hands free and traditional tokens reducing implementation costs and maintaining complete user flexibility
  • Use of 3D not 2D antennae means that keyfobs will read at any angle to give optimum hands free use
  • Net2AIR ensures compliance with DDA legislation swiftly and as cost effectively as possible

"Net2AIR is ideal as a DDA compliance solution but will also appeal to users in many other environments," believes Adam Stroud, Paxton Access Sales and Marketing Director. "Consider a store or loading bay, for instance, where materials are frequently being moved. Presenting a token is at best inconvenient and at worst completely impractical in such warehouse and despatch areas. On the other hand, companies concerned about their image and prestige may find Net2AIR communicates precisely the kind of sophistication they wish to communicate to their employees and customers."

To fit Net2Air to an existing Net2 installation simply requires the fitting of the Net2AIR hands free interface between the Net2 control unit and the reader. Net2AIR is compatible with any Paxton Access P series reader including Paxton Access' small 38mm PROXIMITY P38 reader. 25/Apr/2006 - Access Control moves beyond security

Brighton, UK, 25th April 2006: Mark Thompson, Development Director for Paxton Access Limited, suggests that access control technology now offers considerably more than enhanced security...

The phrase ‘access control’ instantly conjures up images of tokens and readers determining the access rights of people to offices or buildings within a site. Long gone are the days when all staff were issued with identical tokens that simply ensured that non-members of staff could not access specific areas without permission. Today’s access control technology is very user specific with advanced software capable of controlling the access rights of individuals very precisely. Whereas in the past only staff were issued with access tokens, it is no longer exceptional for all visitors and third party contractor or service personnel to be issued with access tokens pre-configured to allow access only to areas relevant to them.

Clearly this level of personalisation enhances security very considerably but with the ability to track who is in the building and where, safety is also improved. Should an incident occur in one particular area of the site, the security operator, with the minimum of keystrokes, can identify all those known to be in the vicinity.

Integration
Further advances are now being made in access control technology that alter the relationship of access control with other security technologies and with other building services and departments that are not specifically security related. The key is the integration of technologies that is becoming possible by the employment of common standards and software protocols. At the heart of these developments is the use of ‘trigger and action’ software controls. These are very similar in structure, if considerably more complex, to the kinds of message rule functionality that many readers will be familiar with in the control, filing and re-direction of incoming email.

Within the security environment, the most common level of integration is between access control and intruder detection and CCTV technologies. Core to this type of integration is the use of alarm events to trigger desired outcomes. For instance, when an unauthorised user attempts to access a room or area to which they are not permitted an intruder alarm event may be created. This in turn can alert security staff through a detailed text (SMS) message or email giving the location and type of alarm, and simultaneously instruct a CCTV camera to change its position and start recording the incident. As well providing manned security with all the necessary information these messages can, of course, be received by patrolling staff able to act on the message without returning to their PC or security monitors.

Benefits beyond security
Integration with other building services - such as lifts, heating systems, air conditioning and lighting - is also becoming possible and creates some intriguing scenarios. For instance, as the user presents their token to the door reader to enter the building their token could also automatically call a specified lift to their designated floor or, as they enter their office, open the blinds and turn on the lights.

This type of application might sound frivolous and yet many organisations waste a fortune in electricity through, for example, failure to turn off all the lights at night. By connecting the access control system to the contactor on the lighting circuit it is relatively straightforward to ensure that the last person leaving the office automatically turns off all lights left on in the building. This is reversed the moment the first member of staff re-enters. As well as extending to the user additional responsibilities or a degree of personal control over their own environment this type of application could enhance the organisation’s environmental standing and generate significant savings in energy.

Other departments beyond the arena of facilities management also have much to gain from the ‘intelligence’ that is gathered by a more advanced access control system. For instance, the time at which each employee arrives at work can be recorded automatically providing an indisputable record of punctuality for the HR department. In particularly sensitive industries, the ability to track employees’ movements across the site offers the potential to combat commercial espionage either through creating a significant deterrent or, should the need arise, through post-incident investigations into employees’ movements.

FM opportunity
All types and sizes of organisation can benefit from these developments in access control technology although, realistically, the entry threshold is probably in the region of twenty staff. With the ability to manage multiple sites concurrently across an organisation’s local or wide area network or the Internet, clearly the larger organisation with centralised or outsourced security management has the most to gain.

Everything described in this article is available now; this isn’t blue-sky thinking. But who is best placed to capitalise on the opportunity? Whilst access control is perceived solely as a security application, its potential to encompass some of the issues addressed above will be severely limited. And this is where the opportunity for facilities managers lies. With your broader remit for building services and your enterprise wide responsibilities you are ideally placed to become the advocates for the integration of building services. This may carry with it a responsibility to educate others within your organisation about this new role for access control. But it also provides FM staff with the perfect opportunity to reinforce your central contribution to the success of the organisation as a whole.

11/Apr/2006 - Paxton Access launches Net2Air hands free access control at IFSEC 06

Brighton, UK, 11th April 2006: IFSEC 2006 sees the launch of Net2Air, a new hands free capability for users of Net2, the leading network access control system. Net2 is developed by Paxton Access Limited (http://www.paxton.co.uk), a market leader in the design and manufacture of electronic access control systems.

Conventional hands free access control relies upon large readers to achieve the long read range. Net2Air completely changes this, achieving hands free access control with readers as small as Paxton’s 38mm PROXIMITY P38 reader. In fact any P series readers installed to existing Net2 systems can be swiftly converted to 'hands free' with typical read ranges from 1 to 3 metres.

Mark Thompson, Paxton Access Development Director, believes that Net2Air now makes Net2 the most innovative network access control system on the market:

"Manufacturers have struggled to develop a high performance hands free access control solution that is convenient for users and meets customer expectations in terms of range. Net2Air succeeds on both points and also offers the advantage of easy and swift incorporation into existing Net2 systems."

Existing users of Net2 can incorporate Net2Air hands free alongside their existing readers without having to change any system components. All that is required is the addition of the Net2Air hands free interface. Users that require hands free access are issued the Net2Air hands free keyfobs. Everybody else continues using their original tokens.

Mark Thompson believes this will be particularly welcomed by organisations seeking to adhere to disability discrimination legislation:

"The cost of DDA compliance is a considerable concern and a disincentive to organisations to do everything they could for their disabled staff and visitors. Making it easy and inexpensive for users to implement hands free access control is an important step towards widespread adoption."

Net2Air keyfobs have a battery life of around five years when in average daily use.

IFSEC is held at the Birmingham NEC 8th - 12th May 2006. Paxton Access will be situated on stand J140.

09/Jan/2006 - Paxton Access releases Net2 v4 access control system

Brighton, UK, 9th January 2006: Paxton Access Limited (www.paxton.co.uk), a market leader in the design and manufacture of electronic access control systems has released the latest version of Net2, its network access control solution. "Leading a substantial list of innovations in Net2 v4 is our new trigger and action functionality," explains Adam Stroud, Paxton Access’ Sales and Marketing Director. "This enables users to link the Net2 software with a range of building services to generate specific actions as a result of trigger events. This will prove enormously popular with users and demonstrates our belief in the future of ‘intelligent integration’."

Potential applications for ‘Triggers & Actions’ functionality are enormous. Examples include the ability to link lighting or heating systems to the entry of specific individuals into the building or the ability to notify security of alarm events via email or text message. "Users could even have the lift called for them as they arrive through the main entrance", explains Adam Stroud.

A further innovation in Net2 v4 is ‘Site Graphics’, a feature that allows the user to ‘place’ all doors and cameras onto a visual representation of the user’s site imported into the Net2 software. This means that security staff can swiftly identify the location of an alarm event and double click on the camera associated with it to view live images of what is occurring at the relevant door. This reduces the level of staff training required and reduces the need for security personnel to know the building intimately. Also, if security staff need to leave the screen unattended for any reason staff can set ‘monitor doors’. Any events that occur at these specified doors while staff are away from the screen remain visible on screen until staff return and turn off the monitoring function.

Net2 v4 also features integration with Milestone Systems’ IP video surveillance software. This facilitates the viewing of time and location-linked video of subjects entering the building directly from the Net2 systems event log. Net2 events that are associated with an IP camera show an additional icon beside the event. To view what has caused an alarm, simply double click the icon and view the footage saved in the Milestone software. The system is also invaluable in gathering evidence in the event of a subsequent prosecution. Milestone Enterprise and Milestone Professional software are compatible with Net2 v4.

Net2 v4 is based on SQL technology providing the speed, robustness and concurrent user capacity required by large organisations. The new version also features a new user interface featuring XP-style menus and icons.

All of the new features are included in Net2’s intuitive standard software that is supplied free of charge.
